Five Unexpected Reasons To Celebrate #WineWednesday
A recent study, conducted by a wine bottling company (who else?), found that Wednesday night is the most common time during the week to pop open a bottle of vino. And while this survey can't exactly be classified as scientific research, it does corroborate the existence of a phenomenon, known on social media as #WineWednesday.
A rather harsh definition from the Urban Dictionary describes Wine Wednesday as 'an excuse to drink too much wine on a Wednesday and Instagram it without feeling like an alcoholic'. But let's be honest; a mindfully dosed midweek treat won't hurt nobody.
If the corkscrew is your best friend on a quiet Wednesday night, here are five fantastic reasons that will back your weekly ritual and give you comfort in the fact that you're not alone.

#1: Wine is healthy
Nope, it's not just a myth your great aunt used to tell you because she liked to unhinge her jaw and pour four bottles of Riesling down her throat. Studies have shown that the (moderate) consumption of red and white wine comes with numerous health benefits: From reducing the risk of a heart attack or cardiovascular disease to improved brain function. Cardiologist Dr Tedd M. Goldfinger from the University of Arizona explains: "Wine helps to prevent clots and reduces blood vessel inflammation, both of which have been linked to cognitive decline".
Now that's scientific research we like the sound of.

#2: Time for YOU!
Whether you feel the need to celebrate your #WineWednesday with the social media world or not, it can be a time for you to wind down midweek and forget about the stress of work and family life. Take off your shoes, grab your bestie or partner (or go solo), pour a glass and get your relaxation on.
The wine bottling company mentioned earlier identified 7pm as the average time for the first pour midweek, and three out of four survey respondents stated that they usually opt for a relaxing hump day on the couch at home than a glass of wine at a bar.

#3: A good night's sleep
The setting in which you drink your wine can also have a great effect on your activity level: While the drink at the bar, surrounded by other people, may make you feel active and attentive, the relaxing bottle on the couch can help you wind down your thoughts and get you ready for a good night's sleep.
If overthinking and dwelling on thoughts and worries makes it hard for you to fall (or stay) asleep, your favorite red wine can help to relax your mind for a comfortable sleep.

#4: Wine and writing go well together
If you're an author, journalist or just enjoy some creative writing, you'll love this:
Drinking wine while writing can help you come up with better, more fluid thoughts and ideas on what you should write. As we've established above, wine serves as food for your brain and improves its functions. But moderation is still key.
And although you may be surprised by what you come up with in the company of a chilled Chardonnay, publishing your work under the influence of alcohol may not be the best idea. To quote the great Ernest Hemingway, "Write drunk; edit sober."

#5: Wine is the drink of gods
For thousands of years wine has been a crucial aspect of humanity. It has provided economical, medicinal and religious support across many different ages and civilizations, and it has kept them ... well, civil. Why not celebrate their time researching the different properties of wine by indulging in a glass? Cheers to the pioneers! *clink*
Takeaway
Unlike what the Urban Dictionary says, #WineWednesday isn't all about getting drunk and posting it all over the internet. And it also isn't about needing an excuse to indulge in a glass (or bottle) of wine. Instead, if we could rewrite the definition on the Urban Dictionary we would say that 'Wine Wednesday is a midweek occasion to allow yourself to zone out from work and life, and to enjoy and appreciate the astonishing benefits of moderate wine consumption.'
